Frequently Asked Questions About Depression Therapy

What is the difference between sadness and clinical depression?

Sadness is a normal emotion that usually passes with time or circumstance. Clinical depression is persistent — it lasts two or more weeks, affects multiple areas of life, and often occurs without a clear external cause. It involves changes in sleep, appetite, concentration, and energy, and can include feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness that do not lift on their own.

Can therapy really help depression?

Yes. Therapy — especially Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Behavioral Activation — is one of the most effective treatments for depression. Research shows that therapy is as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression, and more effective in preventing relapse. Many people experience meaningful improvement within 8–12 sessions.

Do I need medication for depression, or can therapy alone help?

Therapy alone is effective for many people, particularly those with mild to moderate depression. For more severe depression, a combination of therapy and medication is often most effective. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Douglas provides therapy only — but works closely with psychiatrists and primary care providers when medication may be helpful.

How long does depression therapy take?

It varies. Some people notice improvement within the first few weeks. Lasting change typically develops over 3–6 months of weekly sessions. Recurrent or long-standing depression may require longer-term support. We track progress regularly and adjust the plan based on how you are doing.

I've felt this way for years. Is it too late to get help?

It is never too late. Depression is highly treatable at any age and at any stage. Many people who have lived with depression for years find that therapy opens up possibilities they had stopped imagining.

Is depression therapy covered by insurance?

Yes. Depression is a covered condition under most major insurance mental health benefits. Douglas is in-network with Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Florida Blue, Optum, UHC, and more.
