Book a Free 15-Min ConsultYou feel ashamed, out of control, and like no matter how hard you try, you end up back in the same place…
Addiction isn’t a character flaw. It’s a pattern with roots — in pain, in trauma, in what your brain learned to reach for when things got hard. Shame has never helped anyone stay clean. What works is understanding why the behavior started and building something different in its place.
How I Can Help
- Break the cycle of use and relapse — not just manage it day-to-day
- Understand what’s actually driving the behavior, not just what it looks like on the surface
- Address the anxiety, trauma, or depression underneath the addiction
- Rebuild relationships and trust damaged by addiction
- Create a sustainable path forward that doesn’t depend on willpower alone
- Start therapy wherever you are — you don’t need to be fully sober first

Is addiction really a disease, or is it a choice?
Addiction is recognized as a complex brain condition — not a moral failure or a simple choice. Research shows that repeated substance use changes brain structure and function, affecting impulse control, decision-making, and reward systems. That said, recovery does require choices and effort. The right support makes those choices dramatically more sustainable.
What types of addiction do you treat?
Douglas works with alcohol use disorder, prescription drug misuse, recreational drug dependency, gambling addiction, compulsive behaviors, and dual diagnosis (when addiction co-occurs with anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health conditions).
Do I need to be completely sober before starting therapy?
No. Many people begin therapy while still using and use the therapeutic process to build motivation and readiness for change. Douglas uses Motivational Interviewing — an approach specifically designed to meet people where they are without judgment and help them explore their own reasons for change.
What is dual diagnosis therapy?
Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both addiction and underlying mental health conditions — like anxiety, depression, or trauma — at the same time. Treating only the addiction without addressing what drives it often leads to relapse. Integrated treatment produces significantly better outcomes.
Will you work with my other treatment providers?
Yes. Douglas collaborates with physicians, psychiatrists, and treatment programs as appropriate. Coordinated care — where your therapy is integrated with medical and other support — generally produces the best outcomes.
Is addiction therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share is protected by HIPAA and strict professional ethics. The only exceptions are the same as in any therapy: imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or mandated reporting of abuse. Addiction-related disclosures are not reported to employers, law enforcement, or family members without your consent.
